Managing My Emotions – Day 1502

Whilst being on lockdown I have been trying to put together a website. I have to admit it’s been hard and I have made many mistakes along the way. There have been times when I have wanted to pick up the laptop and hurl it across my office in an irrational display of rage.

When I come across something I cannot do and, its not obvious how to do it, I get really angry inside, then emotional. I just hate making mistakes.

The Serenity Prayer – Day 1459

In my first year of Sobriety I went to AA for a couple of months. This is where I came across the Serenity Prayer for the first time.

These simple words resonated with me immediately upon hearing them. Their meaning hit me somewhere deep inside and I have never forgotten them since.

When I find myself facing a difficult situation and getting overwhelmed, I quietly say these words to myself.

Adapting to Change – Day 1454

Due to the school closures here in the UK, I am on Day 3 of home schooling the kids. So far, it’s going okay. (though it is only Day 3). Modern technology means their schools have set homework online and they have a great choice of subjects to choose from. I’m so pleased I didn’t have to come up with their school work myself, Phew!

The tricky part for me is resisting the urge to compete with all those parents out there who are jumping on social media to share idyllic pictures of their children studying and sharing copies of their unrealistic home-school timetables.

When is a Good Time to Quit Drinking?

When is a Good Time to Quit Drinking?

The short answer is never. There is never going to be the perfect time. You will always make up excuses like, there’s too many nights out in the calendar, there’s a wedding at the end of the month, my holiday is already booked or what about that work thing?… the list goes on.

I lost count of the amount of times I said this was my last drink; that I would quit tomorrow or Monday morning. Until tomorrow or Monday came and I had a hundred reasons why giving up that day was a bad idea. I kept pushing the date further and further away.

If you are reading this, then there is a really good chance you are not happy with the amount you drink and you’re looking for the ‘right’ time to quit.

What To Tell People When You’re Not Drinking

One of the things I found difficult when I decided to stop drinking, was what to tell people. I didn’t want to sound like I had a ‘problem’. I needed something that would be concise, something that would not encourage questions, yet it still had to require an element of truth for me.

Being sober is hard in the beginning and having a plan of what to tell people is actually helpful. Even if it’s none of their damn business. My greatest fear was stumbling over my words, getting embarrassed and ending up sounding like I had a huge problem!

So, what should you tell people?

The Goal is to Feel Good! – Day 1417

This morning, I took a walk with my husband. Not a very exciting walk. We dropped the car off at the local garage and walked back home. However, we did go via Costa for a coffee which was good!

I enjoy walking and getting outside in the fresh air. It makes me feel good physically and mentally. I realise that it doesn’t even matter where I walk. What matters is just moving my body and being outdoors.

Talking Helps and Christmas Countdown – Day 1339

1st December 2019 and thus starts the Christmas countdown.

I’m happy and not worrying too much about the Christmas festivities. In all honesty, I haven’t got a lot planned so far. The youngest is excited to have her advent calendar up and I’ve allowed her to start decorating her bedroom with old tinsel and a small tree. Our main Christmas decorations will wait until next weekend, I think. I like to spread the jobs out and enjoy the run up to Christmas, not be overburdened.

I’m feeling happy this weekend because I’ve managed to do 2 things:

Patience – Day 1318

I’ve been trying to be more aware of when I should pause and listen and wait for the right time to speak. I often rush or try to juggle too many things at once. Like cooking tea while answering friends’ messages and helping the kids with homework. I think I am being efficient but I usually come off looking harassed; getting a bit stressed and definitely not giving people the attention they deserve.
